Bob Weir and RatDog keep tradition alive

"With Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, the Grateful Dead formally ceased to be. The band's legacy lives on, however, through its members' solo incarnations, including the Other Ones, Phil Lesh and Friends, and RatDog.

Those part-Garcia groups represent more than just the opportunity for the band's master musicians to keep working. For guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir, RatDog offers the chance to continue the Dead's grand tradition of constantly finding new interpretations of its most celebrated material..."

Grateful Dead Mix CD

"My first real introduction to the Grateful Dead, from a Deadhead as opposed to the radio, was the songs on this compilation...Before I got heavy into collecting live shows I played this tape over and over...in my car, at parties, in my basement bedroom...The old beat up TDK tape is lost to antiquity but I still have the cover so was able to put it back together for this mix...Whether or not this is even a good beginner's guide to the band's various studio albums isn't really the point of this post...I've been in a melancholy frame of mind lately and this tape transports me to fall of 1985 - maybe not the most interesting destination to set the time machine to but there sure was some fun involved!"
- from the original post that accompanied this mix on one of my other blogs, burningdervish.com, which just so happens to be celebrating its two-year anniversary today...

Bob Weir Feature

"In the pantheon of rock guitar Bob Weir may be the most mystifying and original player. He hasn't exactly been hiding—during more than 30 years with the Grateful Dead, Weir performed thousands of marathon shows, and he's kept rolling ever since with his own bands. And yet several generations of guitarists have watched and listened to him chime out chords for hours onstage and thought, what is he playing?"

Alton Kelley, 67; artist created psychedelic posters for rock groups

Alton Kelley, a San Francisco graphic artist whose psychedelic posters and album covers captured the mood and music of the Grateful Dead, the Steve Miller Band, Journey and other top rock 'n' roll groups of the '60s and '70s, has died. He was 67.

Kelley died Sunday at his home in Petaluma, Calif., according to publicist Jennifer Gross. The cause was complications from osteoporosis.

New live recordings - Bill Kreutzmann, Jazz Fest, Bob Weir

From Munck Music:

"...On April 22nd, KBM Trio - the new power trio with Bill Kreutzmann (of The Grateful Dead), Oteil Burbridge (of The Allman Brothers Band) and Scott Murawski (of Max Creek) headlined the Green Apple Festival in Chicago. Vince Welnick

Today is the second anniversary of Vince Welnick's passing. Vince died at his own hand on this date in 2006 after suffering from depression for several years.

Vince has pretty much been the worst-maligned member of the Dead since his arrival on the scene, which one would have to imagine contributed to his depression...in fact, Vince served the role of making many previously-skeptical Dead Heads actually miss Brent Mydland (the runner-up for "worst-maligned", and even less deservingly so)...

I'd rather not contribute to that dialogue one way or the other. All I know is the story had a sad ending for the guy. So on to the music...

There is a ton of Vince music available for downloading and streaming at the Live Music Archive and a sampling of his output with the Dead here:

Grateful Dead: Eyes of the World
from Dick's Picks, Vol. 17: Boston Garden, Boston, MA, 9/25/91 (though this track is from the bonus cuts at the end, recorded 3/31/91)...

Silver Apples of the Moon
from Infrared Roses

Visions of Johanna
from Fallout from the Phil Zone (recorded 3/18/95)

No MSG Jam
from Dick's Picks, Vol. 9: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 9/16/90
