Rock Legends to Play Obama Fundraiser

The Pennsylvania Campaign for Change has just announced a Monday, October 13 concert fundraiser to benefit Obama for America featuring many Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and other American music icons. Additionally, the show will be a very large voter outreach opportunity for the Pennsylvania Obama campaign, which has already built the largest volunteer-based campaign in Pennsylvania’s history. The campaign has more than 70 field offices and thousands of volunteers preparing for an unprecedented Get Out the Vote operation. There are now more than 1 million more Democrats in the state than Republicans, an increase of 500,000 since 2004.
Full details here and here.

[GDTSTOO] Ruby's retirement

The latest missive from GDTSTOO:
"Ruby here, I am very sorry and wish I wouldn't have to tell you this,
but it's time for me to retire. Nothing horrible, it's just time for me
to go after 26 years on the same seat.

I want to tell you all that I have enjoyed every single minute
of this job and you have been the best crew of patrons any
band could possibly have. Thank you so much.

I look forward to spending more time with my family and
my children who have often thought I worked way to much.

GDTSTOO will survive. I am passing GDTSTOO@gdtstoo.com
on to my long time partner Frankie, so let me get her to tell you
what is next:

Greetings, this is a hard day for us here at GDTSTOO. The fun
scale went down a whole notch! We will miss Ruby with all
of our hearts. A few things around the office will change like
our customer service number but for the most part we
will still maintain the same pace and commitment as per
usual. Any changes will be posted to our website.
And now back to Ruby.......

I won't have an email for a while because I'm moving to the
boonies and it might be a minute before I figure that out. But I
won't totally disappear. I will drop by from time to time to check in.

Happy Birthday Pigpen

Pigpen would have been 63 today. From Dead.net:
"Starting a rock band was actually Ron McKernan's idea, and he was its first front man, delivering stinging harmonica, keyboards, and beautiful blues vocals in the early years of the Warlocks/Grateful Dead. Nicknamed "Pigpen" for his funky approach to life and sanitation, he was born into a family that was generally conventional, except for the fact that his (Caucasian) father was an R & B disc jockey. And that sound put Pig's life on the rails of the blues from the time he was 12. Liquor, Lightnin' Hopkins, the harmonica and some barbecue - it was an unusual life for a white kid from San Carlos, but it was Pig's life. And the hard-drinkin' blues life began to catch up with Pig by the very early '70s. He played his last show with the band in 1972, and on March 8, 1973, he died of internal hemorrhaging caused by his drinking."
Much like the Stones fans who don't like anything post-Brian Jones, there are actually Dead fans who can't abide by anything post-Pigpen...No comment.
