Bring out your deadheads

WNYC - Soundcheck Blog » Bring out your deadheads:
"In our miniseries of shows on Super Fans, you just had to know there’d be a time when we focused on the ultimate Super Fans - that curious tribe of wandering fans known as Deadheads. For decades, two or even three generations of them crisscrossed the country in their beat up minivans, following the Grateful Dead on their tours, swapping or selling each other souvenirs and hallucinogens, and bathing each month, whether they needed to or not. (I kid - I have a cousin who was a Deadhead, and his hygeine was excellent. Still, there is that persistent image…)

Whatever you think of the Grateful Dead - great underrated songwriters who created a new sonic architecture around those songs, or aimless, drug-addled noodlers - the fact remains they were keenly aware of their fans and, in their embrace of fans taping and swapping their concerts, they were decades ahead of their time..."

The 10 Most Successful Potheads on the Planet… Cool Enough to Admit It : COED Magazine:
"...These are the common stereotypes associated with the term ‘pothead’...Where these stereotypes originated remains a mystery to us. In reality, they couldn’t be further from the truth. Not only have 42% of Americans admitted to trying pot, but pot smokers have gone on to become some of the most successful people in our society. We’re not talking about Willie Nelson and Snoop. These guys are on the Forbes 500, they’re leading the free world, and they prove that all existing pothead stereotypes are nothing more than myths..."

Review: Dead bring city to life

telegram.com Front Page News:
"The DCU Center was turned into the Deadhead Center last night with the return of the seemingly indestructible Dead. And, for the diehard Dead fans that were packed to the rafters, they were ever so grateful.

With more than a touch of grey, guitarist Bob Weir led three surviving members of the original Grateful Dead (bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart) and two honorable members (keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes) through a three-hour-plus, jam-filled evening of memories, nuggets, music and nostalgia..."

The Dead @ the Times Union Center, 4/17/09

Reviews Albany Times Union:
"The reconstituted (Grateful) Dead, sans departed spiritual leader Jerry Garcia, returned to the Times Union Center Friday night for a truly epic concert that pleased a nearly full house of fans old and new.

It was the group’s 14th visit to the downtown venue, its first since Garcia died in 1995. The trip also marks the band’s first tour in five years..."

Grateful Dead’s fans tested city’s limits in ’88

telegram.com News:
"Worcester has had a love-hate relationship with the Grateful Dead. The fans love them, while many city officials hate them.

At least that was the case back in April ’88 when The Dead played three sold-out nights at what was then the Centrum. During that period, 102 Deadheads were arrested for a variety of mostly nonviolent infractions, including vagrancy, loitering or possession of LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs.

Worse, though, were the piles of trash and waste left in the wake of the city-hopping hippie hordes who camped in public parks and vacant lots downtown.

An irate City Council did everything in its power to make Worcester an undesirable tour stop for the band, from attempting to place restrictions on future entertainment licenses to requiring the group to pay some of the bills incurred by the city for additional police patrols and public works cleanup details.

The Grateful Dead got the hint..."

Grateful for these albums -- Newsday.com

Grateful for these albums -- Newsday.com:
"Aside from a few studio albums in the '70s, the Grateful Dead are far more famous for their concerts than for their recordings. 'Early in our history, we tried to make hit singles - ha ha, that didn't work,' percussionist Bill Kreutzmann says. ' 'American Beauty' and 'Workingman's Dead' have shorter songs, and that's wonderful music, but we stretch those songs out today.'

Nonetheless, a large segment of Dead fans appreciate the studio classics as much as the live jams. Here are the best three full-album examples of both..."

The Dead and its fans revel in community - The Boston Globe

The Dead and its fans revel in community - The Boston Globe:
"...Forty-four years after the Grateful Dead formed, original members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and Lesh, who have performed as the Dead since Jerry Garcia died in 1995, are still - wait for it - truckin'. It's an apt pun, considering that the 2009 tour (which stops at Worcester's DCU Center tomorrow and Sunday) is devoted largely to the Grateful Dead classics, and that the band, fleshed out to a six-piece with the addition of Allman Brothers/Gov't Mule guitarist Warren Haynes and Ratdog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, has been holed up in a studio working up a mind-boggling 160 songs..."

For Sale: Seagate 500 GB External Drive in USB2.0 enclosure - eBay (item 220395531041 end time Apr-18-09 12:08:01 PDT)

Seagate 500 GB External Drive in USB2.0 enclosure - eBay (item 220395531041 end time Apr-18-09 12:08:01 PDT) I have this posted on eBay right now:
"I originally purchased these separately. The drive is OEM and I bought the enclosure for it. Both came from Newegg (and I am using newegg's photos here).

This was a second back up drive I was using for my music collection so it does not have many hours on it at all. I may still have the original box the enclosure came in, I need to check. If I do, that is what this will ship in. Either way, the shipment will include everything in the photo.

I can ship this formatted to MAC or PC and I can ship it jam-packed with music if you'd like. When you checkout, just specify format and whether or not you want the music."
